A ballast for lamps is a device required to limit the current in sodium vapour lamps and metal halide lamps. It is needed because without it the discharge current in the lamp would continue to rise until the fuse trips or the lamp is destroyed. In concrete terms: only with a ballast can the current be converted into a usable form for the lamp. In general, a distinction is made between conventional and electronic ballasts. Conventional ballasts are inexpensive, but also come with high power consumption and efficiency losses. Electronic ballasts are somewhat more expensive to purchase, but make up for this with their high efficiency and operational reliability.
