The chillum, also known as a coupling or downstem, forms the connection between the bowl and the bong. In addition to classic variants there are also diffuser chillums, where small slits or holes divide the airflow into fine partial streams. This increases the contact surface in the water, resulting in even and efficient cooling.

They are placed between the coupling and the bowl and allow switching between different joint sizes. For example, an 18.8 connection can easily be converted into a 14.5 setup or vice versa.
